And i mean cheap, like $2500 purchase price
I don’t care about make, body style or age just has to be 4x4 and not a total basket case at that price.

90's Cherokee. I may be biased, but for $2500 minus tires you’ll have a capable machine.
Cheap lift, lockers, skid plates, tow hooks/ receiver hitch.

Xj
4runner
Land cruiser
Suzuki samurai/sidekick
YJ
bronco
Ranger
Tacoma
It's tough for us to say what will be available in your area for cheap but these are all great places to start and have big aftermarket support which is important
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

In that arena stay away from the 90s-00s S10 trucks and Blazers, the aftermarket support is really poor in my experiance.

Came in here to say XJ Cherokee.
Heck, you can probably find one for around $2500 that’s already been modded.

XJ Cherokee
WJ Grand Cherokee
4Runner
S10 based stuff tend to have weak steering and diffs. A ZR2 fixes the diff but you still have crap steering
Zuki Samurai is fun but tiny
Land Cruiser but i dont think youd find one with factory lockers in that price range
Mitsubishi Montero if you are interested in my Expo kind of stuff
YJ Wrangler
Though what kind of wheeling are you plannijg on doing?

+1 on the Cherokee. Good aftermarket, cheap, millions of them on the road for parts, decent 4wd capability. Oh and cheap. Did I mention cheap?

I won’t be doing full on trail stuff, more like a backwoods style trip around the countryside

I’d say any kind of Wrangler then. Can’t beat a topless drive in the woods. If you are creative you can normal cram enough gear for one or 2 people in it.
I had a TJ Wrangler back in college was great for solo trips but sucked for anything longer than a weekend. Didn’t want to roll a roof rack so I “up/downgraded” to WJ. Its a nice rig but its no wrangler

Same boat as you. Narrowed down to cheerokee’s. Getting hard to find however for a non ridiculous amount. All yota’s are out of my $2500 price range sadly.

Update: xj will wedge it's front axle 8 inches deep in compacted snow of you don't carry enough speed to get through a snow mound. Carry on.

Ranger 4x4. They have great torque and while also being slow, so it will be great for trails. Plus you can carry nasty stuff or sleep in the bed!
